Glixen are a young, noisy shoegaze combo from
Phoenix, AZ. The band is the brainchild of
vocalist/guitarist Aislinn Ritchie, who
apparently began the project in 2020 by
enlisting guitarist Esteban Santana, drummer
Keire Johnson, and bassist Sonia Garcia. This
is their second EP.
The record starts with a My Bloody
Valentine style instrumental of whirring
guitar noise and thundering drums. It's called
Shut Me Down, and is an appropriate
start to the EP.
The guitar calms down on Avoid,
becoming more Hum-like and less
overdriven. Ritchie's voice is faint and
distant, reminding me of Lush. The
drumming is really loud here, Johnson sort of
overpowering the song. All Tied Up is
generally similar, the guitars grinding in
layers.
Lick The Star starts with vague guitar
noodling as Ritchie and Santana channel Robin Guthrie's
solo work, only adding in whispered femme vox.
(I bet that he is green with envy that they do
this with a female vocalist and he doesn't
have one to work with right now!) After about
two minutes, they stomp on pedals and the song
grinds to a satisfying conclusion.
On Sick Silent Santana adds some
backing vocals, which is a nice effect with
the faint female voice, the grinding guitars,
and the thundering drumming.
Overall I am pleased with this EP. Glixen
have some good energy and are making
interesting songs. I would like to see them
branch out a little bit more, but this is only
their second EP, so give them time to develop.
But they have piqued my interest and I am
curious to see where they go from here.
