When this promo passed through the EvilSponge InBox, my first thought was, "Chairlegs? What kind of last name is that?" I honestly thought it was a real name in that moment, like, Annabelle: is she of the New Jersey Chairlegs who came over from The Old Country in the mid 1800s, or those newcomer Chairlegs who fled the fighting in the Homeland in the 1920s?

After listening to a few songs it occurred to me that this is, in all likelihood, a stage name. Now, why one would choose a stage name with the surname "Chairlegs" is an entirely different question. And I have no answer. And this is actually the project of Lindsey Mackin, a singer/songwriter based in Austin, TX. Is Chairlegs a better surname than Mackin?

Waking Up appears to be her third album, and it is a nice collection of catchy indie pop. Ms. Chairlegs is not reinventing the genre or anything, but her songs are fun. She has a slight retro touch to her music as well, like a hint of Shannnon & The Clams of maybe Looker thrown into the mix. There are ten songs here, and none are snoozers.

My favorite is the song Heavy Sleeper, which has a catchy beat and her voice carries a bit of gravel in it, giving it a rich feel. On Ice Cream On The Beach the singing is more plaintive, and accompanied by an insistent piano beat. The rhythm is really great on Concrete Trees. Shoo Fly has a grinding, grungey rhythm.

One odd song moment that stand out to me on the record is the end of Sally, where the guitars are grinding and it sounds like a three year-old kid is pounding on the piano. Very odd, but it kind of works.

Overall this is a fun record. I am sure that Mr. And Mrs. Chairlegs are proud.
