Daevar is a Cologne based doom metal trio.
That sentence reads strange to me, since it
makes it seem as if the band consists solely
of nice-smelling gasses. Instead, they are
from Köln in Germany. Sometimes the way names
are transliterated strikes me as funny. A doom
metal band that smells nice, instead of
smelling of weed? Well, I suppose it is
possible.
Daevar play an energetic form of metal that
draws from the early 1990s. What they sound
like most, to me, is the Emma Ruth Rundle and
Thou record from 2020. Sub Rosa
Is heavy and catchy, with deep riffs, and a
powerful female voice, and it might be the
vocals of Pardis Latifi combined with the deep
riffing that draws this comparison.
Latifi is not a high-pitched singer, but a
throaty full metal vocalist lady. The vocals
are sung down a well, or in a metal pit of
some kind, her voice almost overwhelmed by
echo. It's a good effect.
Daevar tear through seven songs in 31
minutes, and doom metal fans will want to pay
attention.
The record starts out with Catcher in the
Rye which starts sparsely with her voice
echoed to hell and back. After a minute the
band kicks in and this grinds nicely (for a
song that is so phony!)
Siren Song features guitars that
really remind me of the Grunge era. As does Daughter,
where Latifi palys a great bass riff.
Soundgarden would be proud of this track.
The record ends with an almost eight minute
tune call FDSMD, which is my favorite
on the record. I'm not totally sure what the
name is about, but one blog suggests that it
is an acronym related to the study of
Earthquakes. And it does move mightily. Caspar
Orfgen plays a great sludgy guitar solo that
really makes this song.
And on the whole I like what Daevar are
doing. On their BandCamp page they
refer to this music as "Doom Grunge", and that
sounds about right to me. I hear Soundgarden
and some Screaming Trees as well as Windhand
and Monolord.
